Climbing Director

Location: Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley, California

Job Summary: The Climbing Director will oversee the comprehensive climbing program at the camp, which includes an indoor artificial wall and various outdoor rock faces up to 70 feet. This role involves ensuring safety, providing expert instruction, and maintaining climbing equipment and facilities.

  • Director Week: 6/9/24 – 6/15/24
  • Training Week: 6/16/24 – 6/22/24
  • Week 1:               6/23/24 – 6/29/24
  • Week 2:               6/30/24 – 7/6/24
  • Week 3:               7/7/24 – 7/13/24
  • Week 4:               7/14/24 – 7/20/24
  • Week 5:               7/21/24 – 7/27/24

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a climbing program suitable for scouts of various skill levels, including lessons on climbing techniques, safety procedures, and equipment usage.
  • Conduct daily risk assessments and ensure all climbing activities adhere to the highest safety standards.
  • Supervise, train, and certify climbing staff, ensuring they are proficient in safety protocols and instructional techniques.
  • Manage the maintenance and inspection of climbing gear and facilities, including ropes, harnesses, belay devices, and the artificial climbing wall.
  • Create a positive, educational, and inclusive environment that encourages scouts to learn and develop their climbing skills.
  • Coordinate with other camp program areas for scheduling and integration of climbing activities.
  • Keep detailed records of equipment use and maintenance, participant progress, and any incidents.
  • Facilitate climbing merit badge programs and other relevant scout achievements.
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating commitment to scouting principles and outdoor ethics.
  • Support overall operations of Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley and the Orange County Boy Scouts of America.
  • Submit an end of summer report.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to live on site during the summer season working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as program scheduling requires.
  • Proven experience in climbing instruction, with knowledge of both artificial wall and natural rock climbing.
  • BSA Climbing Level 2 certification or higher, or ability to obtain before camp begins
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of climbing facilities and equipment.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a team.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain before camp begins.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with youth.
  • Commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Work Environment:

  • Seasonal, full-time position during the camp operating season.
  • Job involves both indoor and outdoor work, in various weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include climbing, lifting equipment, hiking, and standing for extended periods.
