SUMMER CAMP

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION: Camp Director
QUALIFICATIONS:

A.        Must be at least 21 years of age, preferably 25.

B.        Must possess at least 2 years of experience as an adult camp staff member.

A.           Must hold a current certification from the Camp Management Section of the Scouting America National Camping School.

D.        Must be familiar with and follow the policies on camping set by this Council, the National Council, and the State of South Dakota.

E.        Must be a person of good health and be able to bear the mental strain of this position.

F.         Must possess some business sense and unquestioned honesty.

G.        Must have a knowledge of Scout-type camping as practiced in this council.

H.        Must be able to show sound judgment.

I.          Must practice the Scout Oath and Law as a way of life.

J.         Must submit a written report of recommendations to the Scout Executive and the Camping Committee.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A.        Responsible to the Scout Executive of the Council and through him to the Camping Committee.
B.        Follow and maintain the policies of the Black Hills Area Council, Scouting America, and local, state, and federal laws.

C.        Has complete responsibility for the management and operation of the camp.

D.        Chairman of all camp staff meetings and of the Scoutmaster’s Roundtables in camp.

E.        Ensures the complete cooperation of his staff in serving the needs of the troops.

F.         A friendly counselor, with the responsibility and authority for clearly interpreting the policies and practices of the camp.

G.        Chief moral officer.

H.        Carry out the policies and standards for camping as established by the State of South Dakota, National Scouting America, and Black Hills Area Council.

I.          Maintains the records that are required for a business-like operation of the camp.

J.         Sees to it that there is a complete understanding of all procedures related to Health and Safety, i.e., regulations, use of equipment, and standard practices.

K.        Supervise the following: Assistant Business Manager, Business Manager, Program Director, Camp Chaplain, Camp Ranger.

L.         See that the basic Scouting program is provided and that campers have significant experiences in typical Scouting activities.  Must keep uppermost in his/her mind that the basic aims of the camp are to build in boys the qualities of good character, good citizenship, and physical fitness.

M.        Train and supervise the staff for their jobs in camp.

N.        Deal skillfully with parents and other visitors.

O.        Responsible for operating the summer camp within budget.

P.        Meets with the cabinet (Program Director, Business Manager, Assistant Business Manager, Camp Ranger) daily to discuss and evaluate the program.

Q.        Participate in camp-wide events.

R.        Interview and hire all the staff.

S.        Recruit the best staff possible.

T.         Perform all other duties as assigned by the Scout Executive.
