Requirements for hire: Must be in compliance with the Boy Scouts of America’s national camp accreditation program standard SQ-412 or is otherwise able to become compliant with the requirements before the start of the summer camp season.
– Must have a valid certificate of training from the Ecology/Conservation section of National Camping School
– Are college students or teachers trained in such fields as forestry, soil and water conservation, Fish and Wildlife, earth science, ecology, environmental specialties, etc., are considered to have the equivalent training. Students who have completed their sophomore year in college with a major in one of the above fields and have worked actively for one or more summers in a Nature Center or conservation oriented staff position in a summer camp may be considered to have equivalent training.
Must be in good standing with the Boy Scouts of America, Conquistador Council, and Wehinahpay Mountain Camp.
Preferences for hire: Extensive experience regarding ecology.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Ecology Director must have knowledge of sound conservation and ecological practices and be able to instruct campers in these principles. Specific responsibilities include:
1. Supervise, train, and motivate the Ecology Staff in all their activities.
2. Offer a quality Ecology program which may include merit badges, Troop Naturalist, troop and patrol Goodman projects, troop leader;s roundtables, and Cub conservation activities.
3. Offer a quality fishing program which may include the Fishing and Fly Fishing merit badges.
4. Direct the set-up and take-down of a quality Ecology Area and lakefront instructional area.
5. Work with the Camp Ranger to provide leadership to the completion of conservation service projects in conjunction with the Camp Conservation Plan.
6. Maintenance, inventory, security, safety, and wise use of all ecology equipment.
7. Maintain strict discipline at all times when campers, leaders, and other staff are in the area.
8. Represent the Ecology Area at all area director meetings.
9. Participate in all camp-wide activities as assigned.
10. Make a written advancement report on all Ecology Area activities at the end of each week.
11. Conduct program staff evaluations for Ecology Staff as requested and submit a written report on the work of each of the staff at the close of camp.
12. Submit a complete inventory of all Ecology Area equipment, including condition and recommendation for next year’s supplies.
13. Assist in the set-up and take-down of all camp facilities.
14. All other duties as assigned.
