In 1972, Maine High Adventure was created a legacy BSA National High Adventure Base, (like Philmont, Florida Sea Base, and Northern Tier) and was purchased by the Katahdin Area Council in the 1990’s.
MHA operates very similarly to its BSA high adventure relatives and has great staff retention from year to year. Many staff have previously served at other high adventure programs, while others are completely new to high adventure.
Maine High Adventure’s primary program is running 7-10 backcountry canoe treks, with about 30% of crews adding a ‘mountain-top’ day-hiking experience to end their trek on a high note. Guides are with their crews for the entire duration of their trek.
