Climbing Area Director

Qualifications:

Ø  Be at least 21-years old or older as a mature, responsible adult.

Ø  Previous Scout or youth camp leadership experience desired.

Ø  Have a working knowledge of all Scouting America-approved climbing and rappelling techniques and safety standards, as well as the Climbing Merit Badge requirements.

Ø  Be in good physical condition and have the experience to lead and teach climbing and rappelling safety skills, and the enthusiastic personality and calm ability to counsel and encourage Scout youth and adult leaders when necessary.

Ø  Hold a current training certification from the Scouting America National Camping School as a certified Climbing Director or Level II Climbing Instructor.

Ø  Must have current certification in American Red Cross, National Safety Council (or similar) First-Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Ø  Be currently-registered with a local Council of Scouting America, and be willing to become a Scouting America-registered Camp Staff employee of the Marin Council #035.

Responsibilities:

Ø  Reports directly to the Camp Program Director and Resident Camp Director.

Ø  Train and supervise all Climbing Area staff and maintain all equipment logs precisely.

Ø  Oversee the scheduling and delivery of Climbing Merit Badge classes to ensure a quality, safe and fun program by ensuring that all safety measures and practices are in place at all times.

Ø  Maintain our scenic granite ledge wilderness area as a teaching aid central to supporting the outdoor experience of Scout and unit-leader Campers.

Ø  Must live on-site and hold no other jobs or responsibilities for the duration of the Summer season.

Position Description:

a)    Supervise the activities of assigned staff to ensure this program area is set-up and operated in accordance with Scouting America safety standards.

b)    Operate a quality, safe, and fun Climbing program and ensure this is well-balanced and integrated into the general Camp Program strategy and schedule.

c)     Share daily announcements with the Camp Program Director, other Camp Staff members, and all campers concerning the Climbing area programs and activities available.

d)    Train and certify assigned staff to Scouting America Level I Climbing Instructor proficiency, and conduct adult leader Scouting America Climb On Safely training during each weekly camp session.

e)    Supervise the use of and maintain the inventory of climbing gear and equipment, conduct regular inspections of all ropes, harnesses and helmets in accordance with record log requirements.

f)      Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Program Director or Resident Camp Director.

g)     By upholding the Scout Oath & Law, and the Aims & Methods of Scouting, be a positive example to all others in dress, speech, and actions.
