Aquatics Director

A. The Aquatics Director must be able to demonstrate and teach proper swimming, lifesaving, and all other Mountain West Council  aquatics program skills. He/ she also must be physically and mentally capable of supervising other staff members and campers and be able to make immediate judgments and take action regarding the safety of any and all participants in aquatics activities. This includes the ability to personally enter the water to perform a lifesaving rescue on any participant.

B. Other members of the aquatics staff will assist the director in fulfilling responsibilities as follows:
o Maintain records and make reports involved in testing and passing of aquatics requirements.
o Make regular checks of the swimming area and facility equipment.
o Maintain all aquatic areas in neat and clean condition.
o Train unit adults in use of the safe swim defense plan.
o Conduct aquatic demonstrations for all campers.
o Conduct Monday check in and swim classification of all campers and adult leaders.
o Conduct and supervise instruction and recreation swim periods.
o Use the buddy system in all aquatic activities.
o Conduct and supervise staff swim periods.
o Conduct and supervise instructional swims.
o Serves as counselor for all Aquatic Merit Badges and Programs

C. The Aquatics Director serves as the staff leader for the aquatics section, supervises, trains, directs, and coaches associates.

D. Perform an opening and closing inventory of all program supplies, noting conditions and quantities of all supplies, and submit them to the Program Director.

E. Attends all leader/ staff meetings.

F. The Aquatics Director is responsible to see that lesson plans are written for each subject instructed and these plans are approved by the program director.

G. Gives support in personnel, facilities, and equipment on the other directors as agreed upon.

H. Establishes an aquatic program with the approval of the Program Director, to include:
o BSA Lifeguard
o Swimming Merit Badge
o Lifesaving Merit Badge

o   Canoeing Merit Badge

o   Rowing Merit Badge

o   Kayaking Merit Badge
o Mile Swim
o Instructional Swim
I. Follows responsibilities as outlined in the Functions of the Program Staff.

J. Accept other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Camp Director.
