RANGE AND TARGET ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR | Goshen Scout Reservation

Position Overview:

The Range and Target Activities (RATA) Director is responsible for the oversight of all camp RATA programs, which include Archery, Rifle Shooting, and Shotgun Shooting. The RATA Director is responsible for the supervision of outdoor ranges for all shooting sports program areas, and will instruct rifle program sections. The RATA Director reports to the Program Director and Camp Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate operation of RATA Program.
  • Supervise, train, and motivate the shooting sports staff in all their activities
  • Offer a quality shooting sports program experience, including merit badge achievements and open shoot programsIs familiar with advancement requirements of shooting sports programs and activities offered by the Goshen Scout Reservation camps, including merit badges, awards, activities, and other recognition.
  • Oversee submission of all area advancement reports on all shooting sports activities using computerized record keeping practices.
  • Maintenance, inventory, security, safety, and wise use of all shooting sports equipment and program areas
  • Maintain strict discipline at all times when campers, leaders, and other staff are in the area
  • Adheres to all federal, state, and local laws, and adheres to any required Scouting America, National Rifle Association (NRA), National Archery Association, or other area-specific safety standards.
  • Is familiar with applicable sections of the following publications:  National Camp Standards, Scouting America National RATA Manual.
  • Submit a complete inventory of all shooting sports equipment, including condition and recommendations for next year’s supplies
  • Assist in the set-up and take-down of all program area and campsite facilities
  • Exemplify the Scout Oath and Law. Support Scouting America policies and the Aims and Methods of Scouting. Strive to provide a program that is exciting, dynamic and appealing to today’s youth; that meets the needs of the youth and the units attending camp; and that is fun and safe.
  • Support and participate in camp wide programs, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Camp Director.

Time Commitment:

  • The onsite management of the Scouts BSA RATA Area will be from June 7 – July 30, 2025, based on registration.
  • Attend and complete National Camping School Training, a two week-long training course held in Spring 2025, prior to the start of the summer season.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to register as a member of Scouting America and submit to a background check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to incident reporting guidelines.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain NRA Rifle and Shotgun Basic and Instructor certifications and RATA Director Track from the National Camping School, prior to the start of the summer season. Multiple locations/dates are available to choose from. The cost of training and travel/lodging will be covered by NCAC.

Benefits:

The employee will be paid a seasonal salary starting at $385.00 per week for the duration of the summer season. All room and board that is provided is in addition to this salary. Compensation includes all pre-season preparation and post season closing reports, including all training that may be necessary for the successful execution of the position. This position is exempt from the minimum wage-maximum hours provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
