Position Overview:
Lenhok’sin High Adventure is a High Adventure Base located at the Goshen Scout Reservation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Goshen, VA. Operated by National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scout of America, Lenhok’sin offers week long backpacking and canoeing treks with high adventure program opportunities including caving, ropes courses, black powder rifle shooting, blacksmithing, and more. The Trek Director is responsible to the Lenhok’sin High Adventure Camp Director for the coordination and operation of backpacking and canoeing backcountry programs at Lenhok’sin High Adventure in accordance with the policies and standards of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and National Capital Area Council (NCAC). They provide leadership to 15-20 seasonal staff members in collaboration with the Camp Director.
Responsibilities:
- Direct and/or coordinate operation of camp programs including:
- Backcountry Outpost Programs (historical and technical programs under Outpost Directors)
- Backpacking and Canoeing Trek Itinerary Planning
- Recreational activities (camp wide games and programs)
- Inspirational activities (flag ceremonies, opening and closing campfires)
- Oversee the overall camp program and develop the weekly camp schedule based on unit preferences.
Work closely with the Camp Director on all matters. Work collaboratively with the Facilities Director, Outpost Directors, and other camp staff. - Assist Outpost Directors in the development and implementation of Lenhok’sin High Adventure programs and goals.
- Become familiar with BSA National Camp Standards (for Resident long-term camps and Trek Programs), and assist the Camp Director in ensuring compliance in all Program areas.
- Assist the Camp Director in camp staff hiring.
- Assist the Camp Director in staff and program training.
- Other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.
Time Commitment:
- The onsite management of the Lenhok’sin High Adventure Trek Program will be from June 8 – July 30, 2024, based on registration.
- Attend and complete National Camping School Training, a week-long training course held in Spring 2024, prior to the start of the summer season.
Relationships:
The Trek Director reports to the Camp Director and will work collaboratively with individuals and groups including, but not limited to, the camp administration, retail staff, medical personnel at Camp Post, food service and kitchen staff, Camp Staff, scout volunteers, and parents.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be able to register as a member of the BSA and submit to a background check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to incident reporting guidelines.
- Must hold or be willing to obtain a Trek Director certification from the National Camping School, a week-long training course, prior to the start of the summer season. Multiple locations/dates are available to choose from. The cost of training and travel/lodging will be covered by NCAC.
- Must hold or be willing to obtain Wilderness First Aid certification from a BSA approved vendor, prior to the start of the summer season.
- Be physically able to act quickly in emergencies, effectively communicate, and clearly understand oral and written communications.
- Willing to complete a variety of other BSA trainings (included but not limited to Youth Protection Training and Weather Hazards).
Benefits:
The employee will be paid a seasonal salary starting at $400.00 per week for the duration of the summer season. All room and board that is provided is in addition to this salary. Compensation includes all pre-season preparation and post season closing reports, including all training that may be necessary for the successful execution of the position. This position is exempt from the minimum wage-maximum hours provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
