The Cope & Climbing Director provides training, supervision and oversight to the COPE and Climbing activities that are provided on camp. Works with camp leadership to ensure all staff and facilities meet BSA and state regulations.
Required Qualifications and Competencies:
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must have or be able to get COPE & Climbing Director.
- Must have or be able to get American Red Cross CPR and Standard First Aid.
- Must be or become a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America
Desired Qualifications and Competencies:
- Experience managing a staff.
- Detail Oriented.
- Youth camp experience.
- Instructional or teaching experience with COPE & Climbing activities.
- BSA experience.
Primary Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Carry yourself and lead your staff to carry themselves in accordance with the Scout Oath and Law.
- Work with camp leadership and council staff to hire and recruit a qualified staff.
- Ensure your program area is ready to operate safely and on time for Scouts and Scouters. This includes staff and materials.
- Train staff to instruct COPE & Climbing activities according to BSA and State Standards.
- Ensure all records required by BSA and state regulations are kept accurately and timely. This includes but is not limited to staff training logs, rope usage logs, harness logs, hardware logs, course inspection logs, near miss reports and incident reports.
- When facility issues are identified that do not meet BSA/state regulations that facility or element is closed and secured from use until appropriate repairs can be made.
- Work with the camp ranger to address and COPE & Climbing Facility repair needs so that needs are addressed swiftly, and facilities are always operating within the standards of the BSA and state.
- Ensure all COPE and Climbing facilities and elements are secured from use when not open.
- Be able to work outside for long periods of time.
- Be able to carry and handle 50 lbs.
- Present yourself (and staff for leadership) to campers and leaders in proper uniform.
- Other duties as assigned by camp leadership and the NNJC Council of the BSA.
Report to camp June 23rd (for Staff Week Training) and Camp ends August 3rd. Housing is provided, 3 meals a day each week from Sunday Lunch – Saturday Breakfast.
