A Scouting America Range and Target Instructor is responsible for providing safe, supervised, and educational shooting sports experiences for youth.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Supervision: Enforce all safety guidelines and range operating procedures, including the three main rules of firearm safety.
- Instruction: Teach proper marksmanship techniques and equipment handling to Scouts.
- Range Setup and Operation: Set up ranges, manage firing lines, and conduct safety briefings.
- Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, maintain, and securely store equipment (firearms, bows, targets).
- Merit Badge Instruction: Guide Scouts in earning archery, rifle, or shotgun merit badges.
Requirements & Qualifications
Certification: Must possess current certifications from the NRA (National Rifle Association) for firearms, or USA Archery for archery.
Age Requirements: Generally, 18+ for instructor roles, though 21+ is often required for specific positions like Rifle Director or Shotgun Director.
Experience: Previous experience in the specific shooting discipline is required.
Background: Must be a registered adult member of Scouting America (or able to register) and pass background checks.Common
